Advice for parents of children with visual impairments (tag)

Hi Blog world,

I came across this tag and I wanted to join in on this discussion. Here are five tips that may be helpful if your child has a visual impairment.

  1.  Stay positive: This one may be a given, however I found out over the past few years that staying positive makes things a lot more easier.
  2.  Teach self Advocacy skills early: My mother started to teach me self-advocacy skills when I was quite young, now as an adult I’m not scared to say what can help me see.
  3. Don’t be afraid to speak up for your child: My mother had to do this several times during my educational years and because she did I was able to get the help I needed.
  4. Learn about your child’s condition: This will help you understand your child and their needs early. Better yet, joining a support group can help answer questions and help you feel less alone.
  5. Lastly, don’t focus on the disability: In other words, don’t just focus on their handicap. Just like everyone else they have strengths and weakness  Let them find out for themselves what those are.

The cane debate

Hi Blog world,

I’ve noticed that many people have been talking about The cane debate, so I wanted to weigh in on this. I myself, am a white cane user, and I believe that if someone has a visual impairment, and they have gotten approval from a doctor and proper training they should be able to use their cane.

Another part of this debate is what color should the cane be. For me personally, I don’t use a cane that matches what I’m wearing, I use a long white cane. Even though, I have seen videos where people explain that they have several cane’s that match different outfits.

I have had training from an orientation and mobility teacher from my local independence living center for the blind and visually impaired. The training helped me with my confidence when traveling.

How do you feel about people using a cane to get around? Tell me in the comments below.

A day out with friends

Hi Blog world,

I had an amazing weekend. I got to spend the whole day with my best friend. I’ve been missing my best friend a lot since we haven’t been able to get together since April. So she surprised me with a Christmas gift of hanging out for the whole day. We had a blast.

We first went to Applebee’s for lunch, and we all have hamburgers. I had the Quesadilla burger I really like this burger because it combines two of my favorite things, Mexican and hamburgers. The burger had a great mixture of sweet and spice with a crunch from the quesadilla. I loved the fries too. (That’s one of my guilty pleasures :) )

Once we were done eating we went to the movies, and we continued to enjoy the day with a big bowl of popcorn that we shared together. I had a vanilla coke too. That was really sweet. To top that off, I had Reese’s Pieces (which is another one of my favorites)

The movie we saw was called “The Star,” and I enjoyed the movie. It was funny, and easy to follow since I’m visually impaired. If you haven’t seen the movie I highly recommend you go see it.

I really enjoyed spending the day out with my friends.

Happy International Day of Peoples with Disabilities

Hi Blog world,

Today, December 3, is International Day of Peoples with Disabilities. According to the United Nations website, their goal is to help people with disabilities stay included in society and to educate the public about people with disabilities. I believe that everyone should have a right to a fair education and should be included in society no matter what their disability is. I also believe that educating the public is a good way to end stigma that sometimes is associated with people with disabilities.

Thanksgiving 2017

Hi Blog world,

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my followers! I had a wonderful day because I spent the day with a group of friends. We had plans to go to Cracker Barrel, however because there was supposed to be over an hour wait, we ended up eating at Ruby Tuesday.

I had the salad bar, and a cheeseburger. The salad bar was filled with all different kinds of fresh vegetables and toppings. The only thing that I didn’t care for was one of the flat breads that I had picked out. My cheeseburger was simple and delicious. It also came with fries, which is one of my guilty pleasures. All in all it was a great meal; and my bill came out to be $20 and some change.

The day after Thanksgiving I had dinner with my grandparents. As usual we had our famous ham loaf. We had Sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, Jello, and fruit pudding.

I am thankful for my family, my dog, my friends, and of course, my followers.
